TALENT TALK: DUTCHLADY - OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND

by Graduan

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO JOIN THE DUTCH LADY ASSOCIATE PROGRAMME (DLAP)?

Dutch Lady Malaysia appealed to me mainly because of the nature of the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) industry. I was drawn to the learning opportunities structured in the programme. With a coaching system in place and assignmentbased timelines, there was a good balance between exposure and support.

WHAT WAS THE SELECTION PROCESS LIKE?

It was challenging to say the least! Initial interviews culminated in a final assessment for shortlisted candidates. This was the tough one that involved a simulation of business scenarios from the start. As a group, we were required to build up our business case segment by segment, with the climax being the business pitch to the directors.

HOW DID YOU STAND OUT FROM THE OTHER HOPEFULS?

I feel that we had to blend in to stand out; the ability to contribute ideas and facilitate discussions really gets noticed. Of course good knowledge of business concepts helps as this adds substance to the ideas put forward.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU?

DLAPs are always kept on their toes, from functional assignments to Corporate Social Responsibility projects. Networking is also an important aspect of day-to-day working environment.

WHAT TRAINING HAVE YOU UNDERGONE?

Being finance specific, I was involved in training on systems and databases to facilitate internal financial reporting. On-the-job training is most effective on a project basis. Learning culture within the team makes this easier as discussions and information sharing are encouraged.

WHICH ATTACHMENTS HAVE YOU ENJOYED?

As my portfolio was finance-based, a variety of tasks were assigned within the Reporting team, Commercial team as well as Internal Audit. I enjoyed working with the Commercial team, especially on developing business case evaluations for product development.

WHAT MAKES THE DLAP PATH EXCITING?

Visibility is the most exciting aspect of the DLAP. We are given the opportunity to work on significant projects, and thus the opportunity to work with a broad range of talents and managers within the company, providing us with an accelerated learning development that is essential in our careers.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO JOIN THE DUTCH LADY ASSOCIATE PROGRAMME (DLAP)?

Just freshly graduated, I was bursting with energy and enthusiasm, eager to discover my true potential and capability to contribute in a business environment. The DLAP was the perfect avenue as it was challenging yet provides a learning “space” and mentoring opportunities. I decided to join the DLAP because it fulfilled the criteria I was looking for in an  associate programme: Exposure to different roles and mentoring. Growing up with the Dutch Lady brand also sparked my curiosity about what happens behind the scenes and in the company.

HOW DID YOU STAND OUT FROM THE OTHER HOPEFULS AT THE SELECTION PROCESS?

Just by being myself. I was confident, answered questions genuinely, and shared my enthusiasm for wanting to be part of the Dutch Lady family during the interview sessions.

WHAT TRAINING HAVE YOU UNDERGONE?

I have gone through field sales operations, merchandising, event planning, business research and project evaluations – both on-thejob and in the classroom.

WHICH DEPARTMENTS HAVE YOU BEEN ATTACHED TO?

I have been working with four different teams to date. The first three teams were within the Sales department while my fourth and current attachment is with the Marketing department of the Dutch Lady Growing Up Milk brand team.

WHICH OF THESE HAVE YOU ENJOYED THE MOST?

One of the most unforgettable experiences that took place was while I was attached with the Sales department. It was the chance to be in the delivery truck and deliver our products to the shops!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?

The Fast Moving Consumer Goods industry offers a dynamic working environment. It is essential to understand the industry basics quickly and learn how to motivate business partners to ensure your deliverables are met.

WHAT MAKES THE DLAP PATH EXCITING?

Having the opportunity to work with diverse teams within a short time span and being responsible for different projects.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO FRESH GRADUATES ABOUT STARTING OUT WITH THE DLAP?

DLAP is for people who have a large appetite for challenges and are not afraid to push themselves to the limit. What differentiates the DLAP from an executive role is that the programme is also a career fast-track pathway designed to groom fresh graduates, with little or no working experience, to become future leaders.
